To get in the mood for Valentines day here is one of my favorite "vintage" things, If you can call it that, watching period pieces that evoke eras with amazing fashion and architecture and of course romance! Valentines day is the perfect day/month to imbibe in this guilty pleasure and require your significant other to participate in the viewing of a great romantic movie! I recently watched The North and South a BBC miniseries, from 2004, about a middle class southerner who is forced to move to the northern factory town of Milton. It is staring, a very handsome, Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe.

Of course I have many favorites including Mansfield Park, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility Becoming Jane (Are you noticing a Jane Austin theme here?) and that's just the beginning! The BBC's Masterpiece Classic creates the most amazing miniseries which can be found online for viewing!

So, Grab a glass of wine, box of chocolates, and tissues, and celebrate the joy, sorrow and joy again that is a romantic period piece!

After scoring a vintage, light-up globe for a steal, I decided to try and narrow down the date of production.

This awesome Cram's globe is available from lisabretrostyle2.

I found this exceedingly useful chart, courtesy of Replogle Globes. It allowed me to date my globe to between 1982 and 1984. It's very cool to see how the world has changed, and to brush up on your geography at the same time.

Amy's Old School Tips Get the Look Downton Abbey

Season two of Downton abbey just began (for us Yanks) last Sunday. It is a wonderful period Masterpiece classic show on PBS that tells the tale of the fictional aristocratic Crawely family, Lord and Lady Grantham, their daughters, the children's love interests, the Dowager Countess (the Lord's mother), and their extensive staff. the First season swung into gear with the sinking of the Titanic. The second season begins at the Battle of Somme during the first world war.

The writer and creator, Julien Fellows, also wrote Gosford Park. The costumes are absolutely LOVELY! The setting is amazing with the exterior and most of the interior filming are taken at the imposing Heighcere Castle in Hampshire, the servants quarters are filmed on a set. The plot leaves you waiting for the next episode.

Don't worry if you missed the first season or the first episode of season 2 you can catch them on PBS online!

Lovely, aren't they?

I sold this set of glasses to a NYC interior design shop a few days ago. Yay for me, right? Let's just say (AHEM, Sex and Whiskey Glasses) that the glasses were obviously purchased for resale. Not really the end of the world, as I made some money. Also, I "rent" my basement office from myself and don't have to pay NYC prices for real estate, overhead, etc.

But it got me thinking- lots of other members of the Vintage Market Team have had this happen before. It is, after all, a free market economy and prices do vary seller by seller, region by region.

Without further ado- here are some completely swank vintage decor items that would be equally at home in a shelter magazine or high end shop. All brought to you by our team members, of course.

Nutella Mousse - Your Retro Home by retrotrend

Hello and Happy New Year!

Nutella has been around since the 1940s - pleasing taste buds around the world for decades.

While many have resolutions of dieting, I'm not a believer in that sort of thing. I live a rather healthy lifestyle so when I want to indulge just a bit- so be it.

Christmas dinner was one of those times. Hosting dinner meant making dessert as well. Having made classic Buche de Noels in the past, I decided on an easier version- sorry, a more modernist version.

A simple chocolate cake was elevated with Nutella mousse.

The mousse recipe (which was inspired, if I do say so myself!):
1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
8 oz Nutella
Whip to mousse like consistency- because mousse really is just flavored whipped cream. You are looking for soft peaks.
Place in small cups and refrigerate if serving as-is. If using as an icing (as shown), start building.

No matter how you choose to serve it- you'll love the results!

Amy's Old School Tips Get the Look Hugo

The movie Hugo, based on the amazingly illustrated book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret . And the movie doesn't disappoint! I have to admit it is the first movie I have seen in the "new" present day 3-D and I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't enjoy that aspect! But, It was done marvelously! There wasn't tons of things popping out at you but the city and atmosphere was deep and wonderful. The characters were also developed perfectly! I enjoyed every moment of this movie it is a MUST see!

Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton. IMBD

Limoncello - Your Retro Home by retrotrend

Every holiday season, I make a batch of limoncello for consumption, and for gifting to friends.

The first version I made was from this Washington Post recipe.

Not being a recipe cook, I love to fiddle with soak times and ingredients- but it's a great place to start. Lime and orange peels work very well too. I adjust the sugar to taste.

A small Mason jar or flask of limoncello and some homemade caramels or cookies make for a perfect hostess gift.

Limoncello is also a wonderful addition to trifles and cocktails. A fabulous digestif, best served cold.

The Kid's Table - Your Retro Home by retrotrend

Remember sitting at the kid's table?

I don't, because I was an only child, and the only grandchild for many years. The "adult" table can be a boring place for kids of all ages.

If you are celebrating Thanksgiving (for all readers within the USA, that is!) with extended family this year, there will likely be rugrats around.

Hopefully the parents will consider bringing activities for their children to do, and hopefully those activities will not involve a hand-held video device at the table, or any other noise- making distractions.

Even for kids that enjoy turkey, stuffing, and pie, many Thanksgiving dinners can seem never ending.

Buying craft paper and using it to cover the kid's table is a wonderful option- they can draw place settings, turkeys, even other guests. A box of Crayons can go a long way!

Consider a child- friendly activity that you and the child/ children can start before the meal together. When they ask to be excused from the table, they can continue the activity alone.

For a grade- school girl, how about a knitting lesson?

Maybe bake a tray of sugar cookies at home and buy a handful of the icing squeeze tubes so that they may help decorate dessert?

Another great way to keep kids of all ages happy? Classic boardgames. I'm a fan of Monopoly, myself, but Life, Chutes & Ladders, Pictionary, et al are a wonderful way for everyone to interact post- meal.

Signature Cocktails - Your Retro Home by retrotrend

Everyone should have a signature cocktail. This is mine.

Mrs. Robinson (AKA the Suzi Quatro)

The recipe:

1/2 oz. of lemon juice

up to 1/4 oz. of Campari

3 oz. Plymouth gin

tonic (or diet, if you prefer)

Swirl lemon juice and Campari in glass. Top with gin. Add a few ice cubes and a splash of tonic. Imbibe.

Optional garnishes include berries, lemon peel, a wedge of squeezed lime, or anything else you can think up.

Signature cocktails are great for everyday enjoyment, but even more fun for parties and holidays.

Be it eggnog based, a punch or a mulled cider, festive drinks help set the mood. Champagne (or Prosecco) is a wonderful place to start, adding a bit of fruit juice and a cluster of berries can turn normal bubbly into a fabulous aperitif.

Perhaps a James bond?

one sugar cube

dashes Angostura bitters

1 oz vodka

champagne

Saturate sugar cube in champange flute with bitters, pour in vodka and fill with champgne.

Or a Ritz?

3/4 oz. orange juice

3/4 oz. cognac

1/4 oz. Cointreau

champagne

Shake first three ingredients in shaker over ice. Strain into a champagne flute, carefully fill with champagne.

I was looking for something fun and easy yet seasonally appropriate to make later this week when I stumbled across this recipe.
While mine probably won't look quite this lovely (or, um, disgusting, depending on how you feel about spiders), I'm excited to try them!

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups toasted pecans
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, in pieces
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 ounces thin black licorice strands, cut into 2-inch pieces
6 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped
Chocolate curls or jimmies, optional

Directions

Line 2 baking sheets with waxed paper and lightly spray with nonstick spray. Mound 30 small clusters of pecans, about 3 or 4 pecans each, spaced a couple inches apart on the pan.

Make caramel: Warm the cream over low heat and keep warm while you cook the sugar.

Put the sugar and corn syrup and in a deep, heavy-bottomed large saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Stop stirring, raise heat to medium-high, and simmer until the sugar reaches the hard crack stage, or 305 degrees F on a candy thermometer, about 7 minutes.

Whisk the butter and salt into the sugar mixture. Gradually pour in the cream and vanilla taking care since the mixture will bubble up. Reduce the heat to medium and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar reaches soft ball stage, 240 degrees F on the thermometer, about 5 minutes more. Immediately remove from the heat and cool for a minute.

Ladle a couple tablespoons of warm caramel over some of the nut clusters, to make the spider bodies. Then press 6 pieces of licorice into the warm caramel to make the legs. Repeat with the remaining caramel and licorice. (It's helpful to have an extra hand here, since the caramel can set quickly. If caramel hardens, warm over very low heat. ) Let spiders cool 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, put the chocolates in a medium heatproof bowl. Bring a saucepan filled with 1-inch or so of water to a very slow simmer; set the bowl over, but not touching, the water. Stir the chocolate occasionally until melted and smooth. (Alternatively, put the chocolate in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Melt at 50 percent power in the microwave until soft, about 1 minute. Stir, and continue heat until completely melted, 2 to 3 minutes more.)

Spoon about 1 tablespoon of melted chocolate on top of each spider. Sprinkle with jimmies or chocolate curls, if desired. Let cool until firm.

Don't forget to make yourself a ghoulish looking beverage to enjoy with your spiders!
For kids- Shirley Temples with a gummy body part floating on the top.

Imbibing adults might enjoy a Horse's Neck... don't we all?
2 oz bourbon
dashes of bitters
ginger ale
spiral lemon peel

Pour bourbon over ice cubes in a Collins glass, add bitters, fill with ginger ale, drop spiral lemon into glass and serve.

This last pick isn't vintage, but is sure to be a classic. If you really, really like your neighborhood rug- rats, splurge on Bequet Caramels. I highly recommend the sea salt flavor. In the 5 lb. box. They keep beautifully in the freezer.

I won't even get started on my favorite chocolates (Green & Black's- either the cherry, or ginger bars. Nearly any flavor of RitterSport.)

Simple Syrup - Your Retro Home by retrotrend

Nothing could be more simple than a simple syrup- a key ingredient in many cocktail recipes, as well as crowd- pleasers like sweet tea. I often flavor mine with ginger, or mint.

Figure out what type of simple syrup you'll need.

There are several thicknesses or densities of simple syrup and they have different uses. The thickness depending on the ratio of water to sugar used. The one with more sugar will be more syrupy and sweeter. Follow the measurements listed in your recipe, or use these general guidelines:

Thin simple syrup - A ratio of 3 parts water to 1 part sugar - used to glaze cakes and cookies.

Medium simple syrup - A ratio of 2 parts water to 1 part sugar - used to make sweeten beverages and iced tea.

Thick simple syrup (basic simple syrup) - A ratio of 1 part water to 1 part sugar - This is used as the basis for cold fruit drinks and cocktails. Also used to make candied fruits.

The recipe:
Determine which type of Simple Syrup you want to make. See Types of Simple Syrup above.

In a high-sided saucepan over medium-high heat, bring cold water and sugar to a boil.

Turn the heat to low and stir constantly until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture is clear, approximately 3 minutes. Remember - the longer you boil it, the thicker the syrup will be when cooled.

Optional: At this point you can add flavorings (you can steep almost anything into your simple syrup such as extracts, fruit juices, herbs, spices, and liqueurs). Just put them in once the water boils right before adding the sugar, and strain them out before bottling.

After boiling, let the syrup cool to room temperature, then pour into a tightly sealed, clean glass jar and store in the refrigerator (Any clean and sealable container can be used). The syrup can be refrigerated for up to 1 month.

You can also stir in 1 tablespoon corn syrup to help ensure the syrup stays smooth.

Here are 10 good reasons!

Karma - also called "paying it forward", "reap what you sow", "what goes around comes around", "spread the love". Call it what you want but the point is the natural laws of causation, if you give something positive to someone else something positive will be given to you!
Free Marketing - Free is good! When ever I am included in a treasury I am sure to click on the curators shop and heart them, if I haven't already, as well as heart a few of their items to draw attention to their shop! If you make a treasury people will look at your shop too!
Front Page - Treasuries are chosen to be place on the Front Page (FP) of Etsy! If your treasury is chosen for FP you are sure to see a bounce in your shops views!
Fun- It is fun to stretch your creative muscles and see what unique treasuries you can create!
Team Spirit - Creating treasuries with your team mates items spreads good will among your fellow Vintage Market Team members!
Research - Creating a treasury is a great way to research what other people are pricing their items at, how they are photographing, what unique things they are carrying etc. It gives you opportunity to search through Etsy viewing all the cool, creative and wonderful things people are doing!
Recognizable - If you are creating a lot of treasuries and sending notes to the people included it will help you become recognizable which helps your shop grow in trustworthiness leading to more sales!
Social Media - If you create a treasury the people included are sure to Tweet it, heart it, share it on Facebook which will in turn help promote you!
Activity Feeds - Your treasury will show up in other shops activity feeds which will in turn draw more views the the shops included as well as your shop (do you notice a trend in this theme?)
Community Involvement - Have you noticed how cool the majority of people on Etsy are? Creating treasuries, viewing and commenting on treasuries is a great way to be involved in this unique community. I get lots of ideas by looking at other peoples treasuries and find it so fun to see the creativity and lovely, interesting, unique etc. treasuries people create!

We are reworking the Treasury Challenge and replacing it with promotional treasuries that will focus on a season or a specific sale etc. If you create any treasuries there is a discussion thread on the Vintage Market Team page for you to post your Treasury creations either in the 50%, 100% and promotional topics. This is a great way to market your treasury in order to increase its views! Many people are also on treasury promotion teams in which you list your treasury and comment on a set number of previous treasuries after which the next people in the line will comment on yours and they may post the treasury that you included them in on one of these threads! Views lead to sales!

Citrus Olives - Your Retro Home by retrotrend

Firstly, please allow me to apologize for not posting last week- a little hurricane by the name of Irene had other plans. I'm safe and sound, though was without Internet for five days.

I'm back and have an amazingly simple yet decadent recipe to share.

Can we call it a recipe if there is no cooking involved? Yes.

Without further ado: citrus olives

Buy 1- 2 lbs of mixed olives from your cheese monger or gourmet grocer. Do not skimp on quality! Do not buy stuffed or spiced olives. Do buy the best imported ones you can find, and have them packed in scant brine. Need an olive cheat sheet? Check out this useful guide.
Buy an orange, or several if you feel like making supremes.
Place olives in a bowl with scant brine.
Quarter orange and cut into moderate slices. Or remove peel and slice into supremes.
Place orange slices/supremes with olives, stir gently and let sit.
Marinate at room temperature for two hours, or cover and chill for up to four days. Let come up to room temperature before serving.
(Kindly provide paper cocktail napkins or have a few small ramekins nearby for olive pits.)

You'll have lightly citrused olives and a bit of citrus olive oil brine- which is fantastic on warm, crusty bread- your reward for being so fiendishly clever and charming. The orange sections will melt in your mouth. To quote Auntie Mame, "they take up too much room in such a small glass", so keep olives out of your martinis.

Place your citrus olives next to your cheese plate next time you have company and watch them disappear.

I love butter. (Um, who doesn't?) And there are some fabulous brands on the market. Homemade butter is a personal favorite, with it's softer flavor and texture. A lower melting point and extra creaminess? Yes, please!

Did you know you can easily make butter at home? Here's how:

Pour heavy cream (preferably organic) into a bowl, cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let ripen on the counter for 6+ hours.

Use a metal whisk and whisk by hand, past the whipped cream stage. No need to aerate, just stir rapidly.

The butterfat will begin to clump, leaving buttermilk behind.

Strain through cheesecloth and a strainer; buttermilk will drain through into a bowl below.

Pick up butter within the cheesecloth and squeeze out any excess buttermilk.

Rinse under cool water, let drain.

Clean (or switch) bowl, remove butter from cheesecloth. At this point, you can add salt for salted butter, or a mix of herbs for a compound butter.

Transfer to wax paper, form into a log and roll up.

Allow to chill in the fridge. 4 cups of heavy cream will yield nearly 1 lb. of butter, plus about 1- 1/2 cups of buttermilk.

With this batch of leftover buttermilk, I marinated chicken for frying. A buttermilk cake recipe was tempting, as were biscuts.

Since it's always 5 pm somewhere, let's start with bar basics- a list of ingredients that should be on hand at any home bar.

Liquors:
Gin, Vodka, Brandy, Whiskey, Rum, Tequila, Vermouth (both dry and sweet), Liqueurs, Fruit brandies

Mixers:
Tonic, Diet Tonic, Bitter lemon, Ginger Ale, Seven-Up, Cola, Mineral water (still and sparkling), Soda water/ Seltzer

Juices:
Lemon juice is a MUST!, Freshly squeezed orange juice, Grapefruit juice, Lime juice (Rose's), Tropical juices (mango, passion fruit, etc.), Pineapple juice (unsweetened), Tomato juice (I prefer Spicy V8)

Other basics:
Fruit syrups, Assorted fruit (lemons, limes, oranges, cherries), Super fine sugar, Sugar cubes
